Just recently our very own staff writer Julie Buckingham wrote an amazing article on Laptop Backpacks for Women, which made me think of one of my last trip to Germany. I bought the Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack specifically for the trip, which was half business, half pleasure. We went for just over two weeks and because I had to fit in a Laptop and a small camera into the bag, I was concerned about the space. I was very close to getting the Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack, which is bigger, but I’m glad I didn’t.

One of the reason’s why I decided to stick with Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack was that I was trying my hardest pack less. I was inspired by the documentary “Minimalism” which I had watched on Netflix leading up to the trip. Minimalism, in a nutshell, is the goal to just use your most essential items and not to carry around extra clutter in life. So for this trip, I figured I would force myself to do so by only carrying around a smaller backpack. To my surprise this the Osprey Farpoint 40 held a large amount of stuff, way more than I was expecting. My minimalism is goal remains on track in life, but looking back on that trip, I could have easily packed more items in the Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack.

Osprey Farpoint Design

One the biggest selling points for me and the reason I’m writing this Osprey Farpoint 40 backpack review is the design format built to mold to someones back. There was a real conscious effort by Osprey designers in creating a backpack that wouldn’t put stress on a person’s spine. I honestly can’t say that about all other backpacks. The lightwood frame suspension transfers the load from the harness to hip belt, making it feel like you’re barely carrying anything at all.

The straps and waistband on the backpack adjusted easily to balance the weight. The Osprey Farpoint Travel 40 was very comfortable to wear wherever you go and never seemed bothersome when waiting in line at airports or train stations. The straps quickly zip into their compartment, and the single shoulder strap clips in even faster. The single shoulder strap isn’t my style, as I find it uncomfortable for longer durations, but this particular backpack was better than most while boarding/disembarking, The pack opens like a suitcase which helps with strategically packing your things. There are many convenient pockets to organize your belongings: phone, passport, wallet, etc. The Osprey Farpoint travel 40 pack has far more space than you think and many pockets and compartments to help you stay organized.

Pros and Cons

Personally, I had no major complaints. The Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack had over 80% of its 400+ reviews awarding it five stars. However, I have met some people and read some reviews about things they didn’t like about the Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack, so I thought it would only be fair to summarize their concerns along with including some of the backpacks strong points

PROS
  • Tons of space
  • Excellent design
  • High-quality
CONS
  • More pockets required on the outside
  • Suspension too small
  • Laptop pocket could be in a better spot

Osprey Farpoint Backpack Comparison

When researching for this article I actually found a minimalist using the Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack, (same color as mine by the way). Just look at all the items he was able to stuff into his pack back. Amazing!
