Entitled the ‘Phaal Curry Challenge’, the Brick Lane Curry House in Manhattan’s East Village invites willing customers to chow down on a fiery hot meal containing ten of the world’s spiciest chilis. So spicy and so high on the Scoville that measures the piquancy of peppers, the phaal curry has to be prepared by chefs wearing a gas mask to protect them from the fumes. Containing the bhut jolokia chili, which the Indian military is preparing to use in their famed ‘curry hand grenade’ and strikes up to 1,000,000 on the Scoville scale, the Brick Lane curry packs a formidable punch. However, Brick Lane have yet to have their phaal tested precisely by a team, but it is worth noting that Tabasco sauce scores 5,000 on the Scoville scale
